ATTACK ON RECORD
LONG-DISTANCE FLIGHT £BOOO PRIZE AT STAKE (Received Oct. 5, 11 a.m.) ORAN, Oct 4. Attempting to break Codos and Rossi's record, Assolant and Le Fovre left at 5.45 a.m., hoping to reach Rangoon on a non-stop trip. They are carrying 19C0 gallons ot petrol. Assolant and Le Fevrc, who crossed the Atlantic in 1929, are flying a (550 horse-power Bernard monoplane, and are seeking the Aeronautical Federation’s prize of £BOOO for the longest flight by January 1.
The long-distance flight record is at present; held by Codes and Rossi, who recently flew across the Atlantic and continued to Asia, the total length of the flight being 5500 miles. The. previous record was held 'by the British Air Force monoplane, which flew from Cnamveli to Walvis Bay. 'flic British effort, however, was not favored by the wind, as was that of the Frenchmen, and it is considered that the same plane, had it started from America, could have covered a longer distance. With a new engine it is thought that the machine could fly from Cranwell to Capetown, a distance of 0110 miles. Mr and Mrs J. A. Mollison, who also plan to attack the record, intend to follow the same route as Codos and Rossi.
MOLLISONS’ PLANS EARLY START POSSIBLE TORONTO, October 3. A faint chance remained to-night that Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Mollison will try to hop off on Thursday. It is doubtful whether the conditions over the whole 6000 miles will remain as satisfactory as on Tuesday, but meteorologists said there was no indication oi any drastic change. The plane is being repaired
