RAILWAY INQUIRY

MR. THORNTON’S WORK CO I,I,AP,ORATION 01RECTED While in Wellington last week, Mr. F. K. Ball, as the representative of the Gisborne district railway committee, took uii with officers of ttie Public Works Department the question of the investigation by Mr. O. (1. Thornton, of the Gisborne section of the East Coast Main Trunk line. Mr. Ball was not able to see the Hon. J. Kitchener, Minister of Public Works, owing to tho pressure of other calls on the Minister’s time in connection with tlie opening week of the session, but he had a satisfactory interview with , the engineer-in-chief, Mr. C. J. McKenzie. Prom this conversation, Mr. Ball gained the information that the department is quite prepared to allow the Gisborne district committee the assistance of Mr. O. G. Thornton’s services, for investigation purposes, on the same basis as tho arrangements made with the Napicr-Hastings committee. 'l'he preparation of certain information, lor the use of the district committee, is already in hand, and Mr. Ball understood from the engineer-in-chief that when tho investigation on the matter of completing the line is complete, Mr. Thornton will collaborate with Mr. R. Trevor Smith, of Wairoa, in an economic survey of the operating prospects of the line, taking into account recent developments in transport locomotion.
