Deputy Ruler, under a vigorous finishing effort by his jockey, Webster, made a bold bid to capture the Derby, but had to be content with second place.

Chatham was a pronounced public fancy for the Epsom, and won like a champion under the steadier of■ 9.10. Chatham won this event last year, the jockey Pike being the rider on each occasion. The jockey and'the horse received a remarkable ovation on reluming to scale.

Silver Scorn appeared likely to take an active part in the Spring Stakes. She made a bold forward move at the top of the straight, but weakened in the run home, and finished fourth. Peter Jackson was withdrawn from the Metropolitan at 3.37 to-day. Following are the results: —

The Sydney Sun describes Chatham as one of the greatest sprinters the Australian turf haw known. His performance in the Epsom, in struggling to victory with 9.10 on a holding track, against brilliant lightweights,: and fighting his way out of the 'ruck in the early stages, emphasises the merit of his acliieveinent. This is his second 1 Epsom.

The abject failure of Inflation, although in a good position, and finishing second to last, completely mystified the crowd, which had a high opinion of him prior to his start in the Epsom. The Sun pays a tribute to Hull Mark’s convincing win in the Derby, and Rogilla'’s wonderful burst of speed in the Spring .Stakes, which augurs well for his: Metropolitan chance on Monday, despite the probably heavy going, as light rain was again falling on Sunday.
