ART TREASURES

LOAN OFFER TO AUSTRALIA HITCH REGARDING EXPENSES LONDON, Sept. 18. Unless the support of a gallery in one of Australia’s leading capitals is forthcoming, Australia may lose the opportunity of seeing the finest display oF contemporary British art ever collected for exhibition purposes. The Empire Loan Collection Society has secured paintings, drawings and prints illustrating 70 years of British art. Private owners have generously lent favorite pictures to permit of the immediate dispatch of a representative collection, valued at £SO,OCQ, to Australia, provided the galleries guarantee the expenses, amounting to approximately £7OO. It is understood that two Australian galleries are willing to contribute but that a third objects. English art circles are puzzled by the absence of an immediate acceptance of the generosity __ of private owners who might reasonably hesitate at lending their treasures.

The collection equals any to be seen in London and includes masterpieces by Augustus John, Sir William Or pen, Sargent, Whistler, and other painters. The galaxy of drawings includes work by Frank Brangwyn, Muirhead Bone, Beerbohm, Nevinson and others.
