PROSPERITY’S RETURN
BUSINESSMEN CONFIDENT RISING PRICES 1 1) Napier during the last, month there has been an increasing tone of confidence in regard to the future, a feeling which is fully supported by prominent businessmen whose interests keep them in constant and ciose touch with the markets for primary produce and the prospects which exist for the disposal of Hawke's-Bay produce during the coming season. “The world shortage of wool is indicated by the demand which has been manifested in Australia,” stated one businessman. “An example of the increase which may be expected this year is an offer which was made a few days ago in regard to a line of wool,” lie continued. “The wool last; season was passed in at a Napier sale when 4;]d per lb. was offered. Two days ago an offer was received for the same wool of BJd per lb. Although this is only one case it is not overestimating the position to say that wool during the couning sales in Napier will show an increase of from 50 to 75 per cent, on the rates ruling last year.” Tho prices of sheep were referred to by another businessman, who pointed out that whereas lambs were bringing 10s lust year, this season offers of £1 per head had been roceived in. advance for forward lambs. “Therefore the income of the farmers in this respect will be doubled,"he said, “and tho rise in tho prices generally will result in many thousands of pounds more being received for the produce, which must react favorably on retailers and business people generally.
