Strong objection to a statement made in Auckland that the. duty on imported doors should he reduced, was made before the Tariff Commission to-day by the representative of a Christchurch firm which manufactures doors locally from timber grown in New Zealand. 'l’lie witness was Mr. H. E. Otley, a director of Messrs. C. E, Otley, Limited. He said the commission had been asked to believe that a manufactured door could ho landed in New Zealand at 14s Bd, duty paid, yet the same door retailed at 28s. The witness said it was quite incorrect to say that New Zealand natural timbers did not lend themselves to the manufacture of satisfactory doors.
