UNFAIR TRADING

TOBACCONISTS PROTEST PETITION TO HOUSE (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Another appeal to the Government to exercise its authority under the Board of Trade Act is being made in petitions presented to Parliament on behalf of retail tobacconists in different districts. The petitioners allege that unfair and uneconomic trading on the part of certain retail traders in tobacco lines has made it impossible for a large number of retail tobacconists to continue iu business on a profitable basis. This, they say, has been possible by the sale of other goods at prices sufficiently high to show a profit on the entire trading account.

It is contended that the apparent gain to the consumer is temporary, and will ultimately give place to monopoly of the manufacture and sale of tobacco, resulting in higher prices to the consumer and lower prices to the grower.
