MARRIAGE LAW
AMENDMENTS PROPOSED HIGHER AGE OF CONSENT (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Two important amendments to tho marriage law of New Zealand will bo introduced into the House this afternoon by the Hon. J. G. Cobbe. One provides for the raising of tho ago of consent to marriage to l 16 years in tho case of both sexes. . Under the existing legislation, the marriage consent age is 14 years for males anti 12 years for females.
The other alteration concerns the appointment of officiating ministers. Under this provision, women ordained as ministers of religion in certain faiths not now covered will be authorised to perform a marriage ceremony in the same manner as male clerics. It is understood that the amendments to the law are largely the outcome of representations made to the, Minister by women’s organisations in Auckland when Mr. Cobbe was last in the northern city. He dealt sympathetically with the proposals then advanced, and indicated that Cabinet consideration would bo given to them.
