TRAFFIC BY-LAWS
REVIEW PENDING EXPERIMENTS TO BE MADE Traffic by-laws in general are to be reviewed at an early date by the administration committee of the Gisborne Borough Council, with particular attention to the question -of angle ’parking in the (business area. Experiments are to be made by the committee, and a report will be submitted to the next meeting of the council. In the meantime, the council at its meeting last evening unanimously decided, after brief discussion, to rescind the resolution passed several weeks ago authorising the parking of ears in the middle of Gladstone road after dark. Acting on that authority, motorists have adopted this system of parking to a certain extent, but there lias been a considerable amount of irregularity in parking, and the system has been subject to much adverse criticism. In future it will not be permitted.
Reconsideration of the council’s decision not to permit angle parking in the town was urged in a letter received at its meeting last evening from the Gisborne advisory committee of the Automobile Association. In view of the fact that angle parking was in operation in practically every town in New Zealand the committee considered that the system should be tried in Gisborne. It was mentioned that the previous recommendation in this respect was made on the unanimous opinion of a full meeting of the committee, which was informed that it was also unreservedly approved by the poliee authorities.
The committee urged further that the council should rescind its decision in reference to the parking of cars in the middle of Gladstone road in the evening. ft was pointed out that this system had received a fair trial, and that it seemed evident that the public did not want it. and further that it was somewhat a source of danger. The question of angle parking was briefly discussed by the council before it was decided that the whole matter or' the traffic by-laws should bo referred to the administration committee.
In response to a recent request by the council, the committee off he Automobile Association recommended the appointment of Messrs. F. Tolerton and L. Miles and Patrol A. A. Franklin as honorary advisory traffic supervisors. This particular title was suggested, as the committee did not consider it desirable that those officers should have authority to take any legal action, but should be available to assist the traffic inspector in other respects, as he might wish. The council approved the appointments recommended, .and decided to in- W vitc the honorary advisory supervisors s 1 to attend the mfeeting of the administration committee.
