COOK ANNIVERSARY
GISBORNE OBSERVANCE An appeal for appropriate observance this year of the anniversary of ‘the first landing of Captain Cook in New Zealand was made to the Borough Council at its meeting last evening by Miss A. Tj. Rees, as president of the Gisborne branch of the Victoria League. In a letter to the council Miss Rees asked that -the anniversary should not pass unnoticed.
“Of late years,” continued the writer, “other towns have honored his memory more than this—the spot where he first landed. Tributes to the memory of great Englishmen have an incalculable effect on Die minds of hovs and girls, and tend to reproduce in their lives devotion to duty and love of country.”
As October 8 this year falls on a Sunday, Miss Rees suggested that it might be more suitable to have a gathering at the Cook Monument on Saturday or Monday, and assured the council of the league’s hearty co-operation in any function the council might organise. it was left to the Mayor, Mr John Jackson, to go into the matter with the Victoria League.
