HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES
BOROUGH CONTRIBUTIONS LAW A COUNTY ATTITUDE ' A refusal to enter into an agreement whereby heavy traffic fees, paid in respect of municipal buses running solely on borough roads might be retained by the Borough Council was contained in a letter received by the council at its meeting last evening from the Unwa County Council. It was pointed out that the heavy traffic regulations distinctly said that, all license fees must be. remitted to the distributing authority, so that the Cawa council had no legal authority to enter into any agreement such as that •suggested by the Borough Council. Apart from the legal aspect, the CaW'a council considered that such au agreement would create a bad precedent, inasmuch as it would open the wide question as to whether all heavy traffic license tees collected from vehicles
operating solely within one of the local f authority's areas should be retained hv that local body, and would also create numerous difficulties in the administration of the heavy traffic regulations. It was resolved to'write to the Uawa council asking it to reconsider its decision not to attend the proposed conference.
A letter was received from the Waikohu County Council stating that the council was willing to meet representatives of other local bodies to discuss the apportionment of heavy traffic fees.
