MAGISTRATE’S DILEMMA BENEFIT OF DOUBT (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The magistrate, Mr E. D. Mosley, was baffled this morning when lie was called to judge the age of three young women and decide whether or not they were under 21 years. He thought one might he 21, hut for the others, “it is exceedingly difficult at first glance to tell the age of women nowadays. ’’
Because of this doubt, he dismissed a charge of selling liquor to persons under 21 years, preferred against Thomas A spell, licensee of the Eastern Hotel. Aspell. however, pleaded guilty to selling liquor after hours, and was fined Li and costs.
The police said the offence occurred on Sunday, September 17. The girls were in company with three, sailors front the cruiser Canberra. All were quite sober when they left in a taxi for the Port hills. When the taxi was involved ia an accident later in the evening, the party came under the notice of the police.
