AMERICAN TERRITORY?
SOUTH POLAR TRACT BYRD’S EXPEDITION BOSTON, Sept. 25. Admiral Richard Byrd’s ship, Bear of Oakland, underwent, final preparations t.o-day preparatory to her start for the South Polar regions to-morrow. Foodstuffs and scientific instruments were placed aboard, and the clearance papers issued. The expedition flagship Paeiiic Fir has been re-named Jacob Ruppert, in honor of the New York baseball magnate and brewer, who is one ,of the expedition’s principal sponsors. Admiral Byrd will leave on the Jacob Ruppert in about a week, and expects, to overtake the Bear of Oakland l,olig before she reaches the base at Dunedin, which is expected to require about two months. According to dispatches from the Washington Post Office Department, it is announced that a post office will be established in the Antarctica called “Little America.” This will be one of the first, official acts in recognising the territory explored by Admiral Byrd as a United States’ possession.
