THE WEATHER To-Day’s North Island Report. Blue skies were reported this morning in the Bay of Plenty and at Auckland, but overcast conditions continued elsewhere in the North Island. A moderatesoutherly gale was still blowing at East Cape, and moderate to fresh southerly breezes elsewhere. Tin; barometer bad continued to rise steadily. Temperatures at 9 o’clock were: Auckland 5.1 degrees, Tauranga 55, Opotiki 54. East (tape and Napier 48. Gisborne 50, and Wellington. 47. Rough seas were reported at Castlepoint and Tauranga: elsewhere moderate or smooth. Last Night’s Forecast An intense anticyclone is advancing across the Tasmnti Sc-u, but a cyclone which developed lust night in lire far north is centred to-day off the East Capo. Winds: Moderate to strong southerly, of gale force at places in the North Island, but decreasing gradually. Seas: Heavy between Cook Strait and the East Capo and in the South Taranaki I tight; elsewhere rattier rough to rough. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate to fresh but decreasing southerly winds, with rather rough but moderating seas. Weather: Still unsettled in the northern and eastern districts', with scattered showers; conditions gradually improving; elsewhere fair to fine. Cold temperatures with some severe inland frosts. Midday Forecast General inference.—An anticyclone covers the northern Tasman Sea and New Zealand. There has been a. considerable fall of pressure already over Tasmania, however, and a series of westerly depressions of increasing intensity is likely to advance across the south Tasman Sea during the next few days. Forecast.—Southerly winds, strong hut decreasing north of Hawke’s Bay and light- thence southwards, later tending northerly. Isolated showers at first in Poverty Bay, but otherwise weather fine and becoming milder. Seas rather rough, but moderating.
