RELIEF REQUESTED

THAMES BOROUGH RATES Immediate and substantial relief from the burden of rates was requested by a deputation of borough ratepayers who met the Thames Commissioner, Mr. C. L. Grange, last week. The financial problems of Thames were fully discussed, and the opinion was expressed that the position hao become infinitely worse in the last two years. The deputation asked for a definite statement of the commissioner's policy in regard to the recovery ol rates, in view of recent court actions. The commissioner stated that summonses were issued in accordance witti the legal obligation on any local body, but he emphatically denied that any undue coercion was intended in cases of hardship, and challenged anyone to bring one single case where pressure was being unfairly applied or where a ratepayer was not getting a fair deal. Mr. Grange promised to give the representations of the deputation full consideration and give a definite written reply.
