HOUSEBOAT LOST
WELL KNOWN ON WANGANUI
Tho well-known houseboat neat Whakaliora, on tho Wanganui River, was burned at midnight _ last Friday, Two men who wore sleeping on hoard. Messrs. J, Jackson and P. Ropilia, wort awakened by tho crackling of the flames and just managed to get ashore before' their moans of escape was. cut off. All their possessions were lost in the lire. It is surmised that the lire started in tho kitchen. A wooden structure, tho boat burned quickly. It is about 30 years since the houseboat made its appearance on the river. R was designed by Mr. A. Laird, of Wanganui, and was built at Taumaru nui. Her first permanent resting-place was below tho Qhnra River, but to cope with tho altered trend of transport; the houseboat was moved about seven years ago in order to be linked by road with Tongariro National Park. Tho houseboat was of picturesque design with sleeping quarters, social rooms, dining room and kitchen mounted on a harge-liko hull.
