TROUT PLENTIFUL
ROTORUA AND TAUPO BUSY TIME IN HATCHERIES During the past week large numbers of trout nave Men working up the Fairy Spring Stream from Lake Rotorua and Lake Rotoitij making their way to the head-waters tor the spawning season. Just below the Fairy Spring pool is a 15ft. waterfall, and on Sunday trout were to be seen jumping up the ledges of rocks in an endeavor to reach tne pool. The stream is literally alive with fish. Some good specimens of from 81b to 101 b were to be seen during the past few days. Some splendid specimens of trout in great numbers have also been seen running up the tributaries of the Tongariro River. The trout hatcheries in the district are busily engaged at present in preparation for the season’s work. On Monday 300,000 fry were liberated from the Ngorigotaha hatchery in the Hamurana and the Ngiongotaha Streams, this being the first batch of early fry liberated this season, and a liberation of 100,000 will he made this week in the Tongariro River. Another 200,000 ova arrived at the Ngongotaha hatchery on Monday. The Waikaremoana and Tongariro hatcheries will be carrying their full capacity of ova during the next two months. To date, the hatcheries have handled about 1,000,000 ova.
