ORGANISATION

(To tho Editor of the Herald.) Sir, —There are many points upon which Mr. LLignett and I agree, and one is to seo men happy and free. It is truly sad to realise that people have to herd together, and depend upon leaders, in the hope of securing happy conditions. Before we censure people for so doing, the conditions, as a whole must be reviewed with unbiassed mind. An organisation is generally formed to combat, or confer With, another organisation. Therefore; political organisations are formed, to combat, 'or support, the main organisation in the form of the government, etc. The relief workers’ organisations are outside that sphere of operation; they dealt almost entirely with the organisation known as the Unemployment Board. The relief worker, in his organisation, has two factors to operate upon, relief work and the payment for such. I realise that full purchasing power is a tremendous factor in futuro happy conditions, but the Unemployment Board fixes tho amount the rolief worker shall use, and no kick is allowed. I don’t think the local officer in charge of relief work would prefer each individual relief worker making complaint, whether serious or trivial. The local authority has sufficient emharnssment as it is, operating the overchanging regulations. A modification of a recent one was 'brought to notice in your last issue, relating to married men without children and sustenance payment. One person making a plaint lias but little force, lint when a number is brought to notice, a realisation of injustice becomes apparent.. I can assure Mr. Ilignett that matters dealt with, and not made public, are not ephemeral. The milk of human kind- s

ness has not been sluired evenly among all, and it would serve no good purpose to publish the names of employers who have been refused the further services of relief workers, owing to the glaring evasions of the conditions. It is regrettable that some persons seeking relief workers' services’ forget they are using human beings, many of whom go to » work hungry and cold, iu order that dependents at home shall have a little food to carry on. The late Mr. George Dartou exposed this feature some time ago. If Mr. Hignett can reveal some plan, whoreby relief workers can li,e assured that for the next month, no friction or trouble will arise under the coercive regulations of the Unemployment Board, I am sure relief workers would willingly listen. There is an old saying that two heads are better than o no, and lam sure that collective thought is better than individual, when tho interests of a number are at stake, under relief work conditions. The relief workers have their political associations as individuals outside' the sphere of the relief workers’ unions; that is why I say the future is yet to be revealed. As relief worker organisations they deal entirely with matters of the mornerit. Trusting Mr. Hignett will sec the R.W.U. does not really belong to his category.—Yours, etc., SAM ,1. 'PFIARSON. .
