IRELAND BENEFITS £21,200,000 IN SWEEPS LONDON, June 16,' Figures supplied by Mr Douglas Hacking, Under-Secretary for the Iloine Department, in the House of Commons show that £21,200,000 subscribed by Great 'Britain to the Irish, Free State hospital sweeps, over £10,000,000 has remained in Ireland. Air Hacking, replying to Mr George Lambert (Lib. Nat., South Molton, Devon), said that 'the Royal Commission on Lotteries and Betting calculated 'that up to and including the sweopstake on the Grand National, 1933, the sum of £18,745,000 was subscribed in Great Britain. This was on the assumption that the amount subscribed xvas proportionate to the prizes known to have been wop in this country. On the same basis, it was estimated that £2,500,000 was subscribed in Grant Britain to the sweepstake on the Derby in 1933. The total amount was subscribed in Great Britain to the nine sweepstakes promoted by tho Hospitals Trust, Limited, was approximately £21,200,000. The amount won in prizes in Great Britain was approximately £11,330,000. Asked by Mr Lambert whether the Horne Secretary proposed to take steps to prohibit publication by newspapers of prizes, prize winners, and pther aids to this form of gambling, Mr Hacking said: “That is one of the matters which the Government will consider in the light of the recommendations of the Royal Commission.”
