MINING AT CROMWELL
GOOD PROSPECTS STRUCK Mining matters at Cromwell are comparatively quiet. Messrs. Lomax and party have an efficient pumping plant installed, but tho height of the river is against work on a small scale. Interest at tho moment is centred in the Clyde-Cromwell Gorge, where a party of miners—some 18 in all—has struck excellent prospects on the edge of the flat leading under Spain’s homestead. For one day’s work two ounces of gold were won from a four-foot seam of wash, without 'bottom being struck. The ground is on the roadside of the old Alpine Consols plaim. Other subsidised miners are reported to have struck good prospects in a small flat on the roadside, near Roaring Meg Creek, on the Kawarau. The company which proposes operating til© Nevis Gorgo has a proposal in hand in the direction of dewatering and cleaning up a small section of Doolan’s Creek, which is also included in the property, Mr. Mercer is reporting on the proposal, which will cost several hundred pounds. By an existing race and tunnel it is hoped to make the scheme possible, and if put into effect some exceptionally rich patches may be unearthed.
