OBITUARY

THE HON. W. RIKIHANA (Por Press Association.) DARGAVILLE, this day. The death occurred’at Kaiim last night of tho Hon. Wiremu Rikihana, a wellknown northern Maori chief, M.L.G. from 1923 to 1930, aged 20 years. MR, .TAMES KIDD The death occurred at his homestead, Tatarnriki. on Friday, of one of the original settlers of the Dnrgaville district, Mr. .Tames Kidd, who was also the last of the original settlers of Arapohue, where lie arrived with his parents in 1809. Ho was born in County Down, Ireland, and was the only son of the late Mr. Thomas Alexander Ividd. Ho arrived with his parents at Auckland by the sailing ship Shnlamar in 1809 and went with them to the Bay of Islands a year later. The family returned to Auckland after four years, and settled at Arapohue, Northern Wairoa, in ISO 9. After pioneering in the district for sonic years Mr. Kidd tried his luck on the Thames goldfield and later went to the Poverty Bay district, where ho took part with others in the defence of Gisborne against a raid by To Kooti. Forty years ago he took up swamp hind at Tatarariki, where lie brought the farm into a high state of production. He is survived by his wife, who is a daughter of tho late Mr Edward Bassett, and there arc three sons and two daughters. Mr. and Mrs Kidd celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding in May, 1932.

He came to New Zealand in 1881 and had lived in Alasterton for the last 10 years. Airs. Coradine, who survives her husband, was awarded the Af.B.E. for war and post-war service.

C. E. Dunn, first vicar of Alaiigojiui. Air Weston was for many years chief engineer on the Waintahi and the 'Glans.nmn. Captain Stephen Gibbons, son-in-law of Afr D. AL Findlay, of Wellington, died at Durham, England, recently. He was 30 years of age. Captain Gibbons was an officer of the Durham Light Infantry, and served cm exchange in New Zealand from August 3 ) 192(1, to April 24, 1928, being stationed at Palmerston North.
