HIGHWAY EXPENDITURE

REQUEST FROM GISBORNE £60,500 RECOMMENDED Recommendations lor the expenditino of £60.500 in tho five counties in the j Gisborne district were made at a meet- | iug of the No. 4 District Highways Council, which also recommended slight alterations in declared highways in the Waiapu County. Members of the Highways Council present were: Messrs. C. Ma’ttlisws (Cook County), M. Doyle (Waikohu County), J. McNeil (Uawa County), D. W. W. Williams (Waiapu County), and O. G. Thornton (the board’s representative.) The following officials were also present: Messrs. F. T. Robinson (Cook Coumy), M. L. Tempest (Uawa County), A Guthrie (Cook County), A. G. Lucas (Waikohu County), G. W. King (Uawa County), A. K. Gilmour (Waiapu County), G. D. Turnbull (assistant road engineer), and C. Halliday (clerk). On , the motion of Mr. Matthews, seconded ! by Mr. Doyly, Mr. Thornton was rei elected chairman. The schedules for tho annual main highways estimates covering construction and maintenance items Were considered atlength and items to the extent of £22,005 for construction work and £38,500 for maintenance work were recommended for approval by the Main Highways Board. The amount for construction is approximately the same as last year, but the maintenance application is slightly larger. The council also decided to recommend that Harris’ Hill on the GisborneWairoa, via Ilangaroa main highway, be regraded and reformed, the reformation: to bo carried out by relief workers and the metalling to be provided from tho council's allocation.

The only application for the annual review of highways was from the Waiapu County Council, the application being as followsßotokflutuku-Wai-o--matatini highway, Orrt. to 7.64 m. to be reduced to 2 miles; Takapau-Ihungia highway, om. to 5.5 m. to. bo extended U miles; Tapmvaeroa highway, Om. to 3.5 m. to be extended A mile; TikitikiRangitukia, om. to 1.5 m. to be declared a main highway. After discussion, the council decided to again recommend the first three items for the consideration of the Main Highways Board, the Waiapu County Council agreeing to withdraw its application regarding the Tikitiki-Rangi-tukia road.
