DOMINION'S POPULATION
INCREASE FOR THE YEAR ESTIMATED STATISTICS The estimated population of New Zealand, with its dependencies and mandated territory, now exceeds 1,000,000. The males, 810,428, continue to largely outnumber* the females, 783,701. Twelve months ago the total was 1,587,078. It is note-
worthy that during the quarter ended March 31 last, the population showed an increase ,of 3259, compared with ail increase of 2745 during the corresponding quarter of 1932. At the end of the official year on March 31, the Govonrition! Statistician estimated the population of New Zealand proper, including'Maoris, to be .1,530,904 (783,854- males and. 753,110 females). The population of the Cook and Niue and other islands, estimated' at December 31, 1932, was 15,337 (783.1 males, 7500 females). On.
the Tokelau Islands, last estimated at August, 1931, the sexes wore very evenly divided, the total of 1084 consisting of 528 males and 520 females. The population of the mandated territory of Western Samoa, on .December 31 last.was estimated to be 4(3,840 (males 24,215 and females 22.025). The estimate of the Maori population at March 31 last; is 07,020 males and 34,111 females, making a total of
71,131. Of this Maori population only 3092 are living in the Smith Island. Tim total population of the North Island is set down at 991,182, as- compared with 545,782 in the South island. It is now seven, years since the last detailed census was taken, ■ami the margin of error in the estimated figures is accordinglv increased.
