DISORDERLY MEETING PROTEST AGAINST BAN PERTH, March 22. Pandemonium prevailed for the greater part of a meeting held by the Citizens’ Freedom League in Maylands Town Hall last night to protest against tho Government’s recent suppression of newspaper crossword contests. During the first .rfhrce-quartors of an hour men frequently took their coats off and threatened to fight, and several women, on tho verge of fainting, wero escorted from tho hall. A policeman and two commissionaires could not keep order, and a posse of polico had to be summoned before comparative quiet was restored. Mr. H. A. Axford, V.C., the first speaker, had not made much headway when he had a heated exchange with a man in the hall. He left tho platform, ostensibly to come to holts with tho inter jector, but he was ordered back by the solitary policeman on duty. After disnutos in various parts of the hall and frequent hoots, catcalls, and cheers, the police reinforcements arrived, A league speaker said that Mr. T. ] Pond den, son of the Minister for Police, Mr. ,T. Pearl don. was participating in an * organised attempt to prevent n. fair hearing. Tho Minister’s son tried to sneak, hut was edged off the platform. The Minister later arrived, and, taking* off his coat, replied heatedly to various allegations. At the conclusion of his sneech, Mr. pcadden. freely perspiring, Wt tho hall, followed bv a large crowd. | The hall was still emptying when a. subsennpnt league speaker began a speech,' and the meeting was closed.
