NUHAKA NEWS

(Herald Correspondent.) The Nuhaka farmers’ branch of tlio New Zealand Labor Party held its monthly meeting last Thursday, when there was a large attendance. The .ipecial feature of the meeting was tho visit of Mr. D. W. Coleman, member for this district, also Mr. Harris, president of tho Gisborno branch of the Labor Party, Mr. Hansen, secretary cf the L.R.G., and Mr. Houlahan. The president or the Nuhaka branch, .Mr. J. T. Begley, welcomed Mr. Coleman and party, and said bow pleased lie was to see them. He wished to compliment Mr. Coleman on his Mayoral campaign; he should have had more moral support from the people in Gisborne, and lie, Mr. Begley, was confident that if Mr. Coleman stood again lie would go in with a big majority. Mr. Coleman, in reply, thanked the chairman for his remarks. He was very pleased to he at the meeting, as they had always been such loyal supporters of the Labor movement. The speaker then proceeded to explain his recent Mayoral campaign, and stated there was no split in the Gisborne Labor Party; in fact, they were now all tho stronger. He was defeated, but not downhearted. Messrs. Harris and Hansen also spoke on tho work of the party in Gisborne, and its achievements. It was decided to appoint two delegates in Gisborne to represent the Nuhaka branch. A very interesting address was given by Mr. W. Higgins, his subject being “Tho Unemployment in New Zealand.” Mr Higgins said he could not agree with any action or proposal the Government or Unemployment Board had yet attempted to alleviate the present distress, or for the benefit of the unemployed. He criticised the Unemployment Board and its allocations, and said that poverty and unemployment should not exist iri the midst of plenty. The speaker claimed that there was no excuse for the continual drop in the allocations, and that the Labor Party must stick together for an ultimate erid, to put the party on tha Treasury : benches. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Higgins for his interesting address. A dainty supper was. handed round by the ladies. Mr. Houlahan moving a vote of thanks for their kindness. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the chair, proposed bv Mr. D. W. Coleman. Mr. N. South, Napier, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs P. J. Brewster. Nuhaka. —Mr. C. E. Stewart, Napier, is staying | with his son, Mr. J. ,K, Stewart, “Whiorau.”
