HELP FOR FARMERS
SOUTH AFRICAN PLANS CAPETOWN, March 24. In an announcement to a deputation of farmers from the Orange Free State, Mr Havenga, Minister of Finance, stated that he is framing a scheme which will result in strong measures being taken to solve the 'problem facing the farmers. He indicated that these measures were in the nature of cheaper interest rates and temporary release from certain obligations. He added that he had approached the Land Bank with the request that the time for the payment of interest by farmers should be extended. Facilities, said the Minister, wov»la be given to smaller municipalities to obtain loans at low rates of interest to uiable them to engage in schemes for extension. These loans would probably bear interest at the rate of 4 per cent. From other sources it is understood that the Government will assist directly in the removal of stock from drought-sticken areas and that maize and fodder depots will be established at various centres as a means of saving the animals in the -areas concerned; also that the 'Government will assist farmers in the purchase of maize and other foodstuffs on easy terms.
