OLD WOODEN STEAMER

WORK OF RECONSTRUCTION The work of reconstructing the old wooden steamer Daphne, which has been on a slipway at Freeman’s Bay, Auckland, for the past year, is still proceeding. The vessel, however, is not expected to bo placed in service for some considerable time. The Daphne, which is of 192 tons, was built by Mr. W. 11. Brown in 1907, and was originally owned by Mr. A. J. Farmer. About 20 years ago she was purchased by the Northern Company and ran in tho Kawau and Mangawai trade for many years, later being used in tho Hauraki Gulf service. She was withdrawn from commission over three years ago and was laid up at an anchorage in Shoal Bay, afterwards being sold to shipbreakers. The vessel was stripped, but it was found that the hull was in good condition, and she was again sold to A. G. Frankham, Limited, a firm which recently bought the Baroona, a former trawler, which is being reconstructed.
