YOUNG MAN’S FRAUD
THEEE YEARS’ SENTENCE
CONFIDENCE TRICKS (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, tins day. Jack Walker, 32, a salesman, was sentenced to-day to three years’ hard labor lor conspiring to deiraud a fanner. Mr, Justice Smith, before sentencing him, read a cablegram from the Vancouver police describing the accused as a card sharper and coin matcher. It is quits clear that lie had practised as a confidence man. The sum involved in the conspiracy was £SBO, of which the accused alleged that lie giot only ,£lB2. The accused had told a detective that he thought Now Zealand a great little country, and that there was a let. of money to he made in Rotorua hy a couple of good men, “hut 1 would want a little protection. Wo would give you 5 per cent., raid guarantee that wc whin Id take on visitors and never touch New Zealanders.” The judge added : “When you get out of gaol, if would he as well for you to leave the country.”
