FRENCH SPY FEVER

PEARS OP GERMANY AMAZING NEW FORTIFICATIONS (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Received May 16, noon.) LONDON, May 15. The Daily Express’ Paris correspondent says that France is in the grip of a spy lever, recalling the period of the Dreyfus case. There is not a day without a suspect being arrested on a charge of spying for Germany or Italy. It is alleged that there are hundreds of Alsatians in Germany’s pay, and that foreign workers are coming to the fortified areas in Alsace in order to discover the secrets of the chain of underground forts stretching from the English Channel to the Yosges. These have cost £300,000,000, and will enable a whole army corps to live 150 ft. underground fully provisioned for one year.-

The Dally Mail’s Paris correspondent says that at the traditional procession celebrated on Joan of Arc’s Day, participating patriots were Impressed by M. Daladier’s statement that the girdle of France’s eastern fortresses and fortified lines of almost impassable design was nearly completed, and war factories were busily producing armaments and equipment for them, the preference for offensive armaments ensuring the adequacy of the national defences in any eventuality.
