Services were helil in the Anglican and Catholic Churches on Good Friday; combined service being held by the local Methodists ami the Salvation Army at the latter’s citadel, Captain Hunter preaching. On Easter Sundaybright services were held in keeping with the Resurrection.

There was a fairly good influx of visitors to the scenic and health rc sorts in the district, though not as niany as usual left for other parts, preferring to patronise sports nearer home, the regatta and sports at Wai rpa claiming the chief attention, whilst large numbers of Maoris and- many Europeans proceeded to tin Anglican Chur.eh hui at Nuhaka. At present When the Hospital B ::;r< is coining in for a good deal of criticisui -in regard to out-ddor relief, it may. be of interest to state the amount that body spent during last year. I totalled £573 Is ad, according to th< ■balance-sheet, just out, against' ai estimate of £3OO. This does not in elude district nursing, and is believed to be a record for this district. The proposed estimate for the ensuing year is £6OO.

For the year ended March 31, 1933, the estimated receipts of the Wairoa Hospital Board were £7355, and the actual amount received £7328 ICs 7d, the debit being £842 7s 2d. Earthquake Restoration was estimated at £SO, but the total was over £6OO, the Government not rendering the expected assistance.

At the Waiau sports the weight estimating of two sheep (actual weight 1311 b.) resulted: Miss D. Svensen, 130*1b., 1; A. Howell, 1301 b., 2. At the monthly meeting of the W.C.TiU. there was a good attendance of members. Mrs J. Macdonald presided. The meeting opened with a hymn and prayer, after which a report sent by Mrs J. Alexander from Invercargill was read, detailing the proceedings at the annual convention ■Mrs C. J. Mackay gave an address oi prohibition in Canada. Mrs Macdonald reported on a temperance lecture she had given at Whakaki, which was well received. It was decided to send a letter to the Wairoa Borough Council as a protest against organised Sunday sports, and asking that a ban be placed on them. Afternoon tea was served iand the meeting closed with prayer. Mr Hector Macdonald, who has been visiting, his parents, Mr and Mrs J. Macdonald, returned to Hastings on Tuesday.—Miss Hook, Hastings, is the guest of Mr and Mrs J. Macdonald.— Mr J. Ford, of the Public Works Be pprtment, Wairoa, is a patient in the Wairoa Hospital to undergo an opera tioij for appendicitis. His mother ar rived from Wanganui on Saturday night.— Miss Thomass, Gisborne, is tin guest of Captain Hunter, of the Salvation Army.— Mr and Mrs O. Coop ■Mahia. were visitors to Wairoa last week-end.
