TE KARAKA SPORTS

LARGE FIELDS A FEATURE GROUND IN GOOD CONDITION MEETING WELL ATTENDED The weather could not have been kinder for the fourteenth animal meeting of the Waikohu R.S.A. Sports Club, held to-day at Te Ear aka Recreation Ground. The occasion was a l 'red-letter day for the residents of the town and surrounding districts, and daring the morning and early afternoon, all roads led to the ground. The attendance at S 3 p.m. was large, probably cine of the largest in the history of this /-meeting. The trees on the field provided ample shelter for picnickers, many parties taking the opportunity of spending tlm whole day in the open. /

The programme was a inost comprehensive one, and included/ amateur and professional athletic and cycling events, held under the respective auspices of the two Gisborne Clubs; axemen’s eveuts, dancing, horse eveuts, and a number of miscellaneous competitions such as stepping the chain, naiLdriving and weight estimating. The ground was in exe'Client order, and the condition of tin* tracks showed that a great deal of time* had been spent in preparation. \ An energetic committed, with Mr. W. J. Nisbett at its head, ya-s in charge of the arrangements, which', as in the case of past meetings, left little to be desired. In all, thero were 60 different events, and the number of entries received exceeded all expectations. Additional entries were received ofuring the morning, and when events were held, there were considerably more Competitors than appeared on the programme. An outstanding performance was that of Thornley Campbell, \ tho well-known amateur cyclist, in the{ 880yds handicap nice, in which he registered the fast time of lmin. 9 l-ssec.-, thus lowering the Poverty Bay. nhiaieur record by 2 4-ssec. The record Was previously held by Jack (Digger) Douglas, a star of the local tracks some yiars ago. In addition to the usual refreshments and luncheon stalls on tlrp ground, there was a sale of basketworkf organised by tho Gisborne branch of the R.S.A., and for the. children there we|p several sideshows.
