PENSIONS THEFT
£I3OO IN NOTES MISSING WARRANT ISSUED FOR CLERK -MELBOURNE, April 1. Pensions money amounting to £I3OO was found to |je missing from sealed bags at a bank at Prn’hran yesterday morning. A postal clerk who has disappeared is being sought by the police and postal inquiry officers. A cheque for £IBOO was handed to the postal clerk by the I’raliraii -postmaster on Wednesday, so that £IBOO in cash might be drawn from the bank for the fortnightly payment- of pensions cm Thursday. The clerk, cashed the cheque and curried £I3OO in notes and £SOO in coins to an inner room to be sorted and placed in sealed bags. The sealed bags were given into the charge of bank officials by the clerk, who received 11 receipt for the number of bugs. The bank officials, who knew only the number of (lie bags and not their contents, placed them in a safe deposit ready 1o be withdrawn mrixt morning. The clerk, when he returned from the bank, said that he was nmvell, and asked permission to go home an hour arid 11 half before the usual time, and he left the office. Subsequently, his wife informed the Prahran postal authorities that her husband had not returned home, and 011 going to the bank and opening the sealed hags about; half past 8 o’clock, the postal officials found that £I3OO in £1 notes was missing. Only £SOO in coins remained in the bags. A warrant has been issued for tho arrest of tlie postal clerk.
