New Novels
THERE is little else in "The Sliding Death," Mr. Kennedy Bruce’s story of the Far East, but terrible excitement. So many ingredients, however, go to creating this one emotion that it would perhaps bo fairer to say that his story contains every ruse known in the development of a thrilling novel. A very useful type of young man to have in the force was police Constable Richardson. Ho said and did the things an ambitious and zealous ofticor should. In fact, the chief attraction of Sir Basil Thomson’s story, "P.C. Richardson’s First Caso," is that his policemen are real, arriving ar their results by the expenditure of perspiration, rather than by the aid of inspiration, applying the well-tried rules of the principle of elimination to their inquiries rather than indulging in any of the fancy work which usually adorns this class of tale. The story is a good one, with enough of mystery in it to keep the reader wondering wluo killed Mrs Cntclipool. The air story is beginning to rival Hie tales of the sea, and Mr. Rex Beach’s "Beyond Control" is a good specimen of this comparatively new genre. It concerns the fortunes of "Casey" Haddon, an intrepid ace of the air. who, in the dry atmosphero of the U.S.A., has to fight against, tho lure of alcoholism. In this struggle he is saved by tho vigorously attractive Cadence, a girl devoted to flying, who soon takes Casey in hand at the expense of his rival, tho FrouchAmcfican Larue.
