TOURNAMENT OPENS HIGH STANDARD BOXING (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. The university inter-college tournament opened to-day with preliminaries of boxing and tennis, and rowing eights this afternoon, and also a cricket match bet ween Auckland and Victoria. Fine contests and a high standard of boxing were seen at the Town Hall. Results were: Bantam weight, Cotton (Otago), 8.9. beat Malcolm (Auckland), 8.7. Featherweight, Steele (Auckland), 9.2, heat Moller (Otago), 9.2. Lightweight, Wills (Canterbury), 9.7, beat Wild (Victoria), 9.11. Middleweight, Dovi (Otago), 10.4, beat Brittendeu (Canterbury), 10.5; Claris (Victoria), 10.4, heat Mulgan (Auckland). 11.2. Light-heavyweight, Keane (Otago), 11.0, heat Barker (Auckland), 11.12, after an extra round. The middleweight contest was described as the best ever seen at a university boxing tourney.
