MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING (Herald Correspondent.) At the monthly meeting of the Uawa County .Council held yoste.day, t~ore were present the chairman, Cr. J. McNeil, and Crs. J. L. Reeves, F. AV. Shelton, C. E. Smith, S. K. Spencer, and P. T. Weeks. Leave of absence was granted to Crs. H. P. Barron and E. C. Loisol. The Public Works Department, Wellington, advised that as a result of a recent inspection it was noted that the braiding of the overhead elec trie light cables was beginning to show signs of fraying.—Received. A letter from the New Zealand Counties’ Association stated that an executive meeting would be held on April 21.—1 t was resolved to forward a remit urging the repeal of section 50 of the A’aluation of Land Act,, 192.3. The Cook Hospital Board forwarded details of the proposed capital expenditure amounting to £I2OB 10s foi the ensuing yea..—it was decided that the clerk be instructed to write asking that a considerable reduction bo made in the capital expenditure estimates. The district engineer, Gisborne, ad•ised that it was yet too early to en-' >r into commitments for road purposes, and suggested that an applica-

Mr A. D. Hollis applied for consent io subdivide the new hotel site. —it was decided that the council has no objection to the proposed subdivision.
The Cook County Council wrote stating that a new ear had been purchased for the traffic inspector, and that -the Main Highways Board had approved of the purchase of a pair of “drivebn” loadometors. —The purchase of the new car and a pair of loadometers was
approved. It was resolved that the clerk be instructed to urge for a reply to the council’s application for a revaluation of the county.
Considerable discussion took place on the question of outstanding rates, and it was eventually resolved that I summonses for outstanding rates be issued forthwith. Accounts amounting to £1746 3s 5d Were passed for payment. ENGINEER’S REPORT The engineer reported as follows: “Secondary Highways. Messrs. Goosman and Company have have completed the sealing contract on the Tolaga Tauwhareparao highway. Very considerable extras were required on this work owing to the condition in which the surface had got into. A commencement lias been made with shingling on the metal lengths on the lower end of the highway. “Arakiln Riding.—Ropehami Hautapu has completed his contract. About 40 chains of Bartram’s Hill has boon top-dressed with shingle. A few yards of spawls are being got out at Arakihi for metalling the beginning of the Kioro road, about three chains of which would be impassable this winter. “ Llauiti Riding.—Metalling has been proceeding’on the old coast road, and has made good progress. The road towards the sanitary depot has been spawled and blinded. “Mangahei Riding.—The 25 chains of metalling on the Mangatokeruu road has been completed and passed by the Public Works Department. “Mangatuna Riding.—The 23 chains of metalling on the Mangatuna crossing road has been completed and passed by tho Public Works Department. on a bridge on Jellie’s road, and drains on Jellie’s road are being attended to. “Paremata Riding.—A few yards of spawns have been carted and spread oil the beginning of the Mangahei road. “Tauwhareparae Riding.—Pipes for culverts on Huanui and Tutamoe roads have been ordered and will be carted out, and will be put in at an early date. The 30in. culvert near the bottom of Caldwell’s lull has been removed ro a new site and a chute put in. The Public Works Department is making good progress with the metalling and improvements on Caldwell’s hill. The slip on the Mnngaruamu has been cleared. “The fencing at the dip and at Rototahi holding paddocks authorised last meeting has been carried out. Work under the No. 5 scheme, mostly or, roadworks, has been proceeding as usual. ’ ’
