WORK TO RESUME
OHAI COAL FIELDS OWNERS’ TERMS ACCEPTED (Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, this day. After a strike extending over six months, the coal miners on tho Ohai field will resume work this morning. A meeting of fhe union was held yesterday to consider tho report of the recent conference in Christchurch, and a secret ballot resulted in 144 against resumption, and 113 for. As a threofifths majority is required to continue, tho strike, the miners will resume work. Tho conditions will bo substantially those set out by the owners prior to the strike, with various concessions, including the,right to contract through union representatives and a. slight increase in wages amounting to |d a ton at Mossbank and 2d a ton in the solid at Linton and Wairaki. The companies had agreed to carry 20 per cent, more hands than the normal requirements run in the pits. In other words, the work will be rationed, but at Mossbank, it is stated, all hands can be absorbed. The hire and fire clause which has been tlm chief bone of contention, will remain in the agreement, the owners having won their point. Tho agreement will expire on January 31 next.
