BOWLS

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS FOURS FINAL DECIDED GISBORNE FURNISHES WINNERS The annual champion of champion fours competition, conducted by the Gisborne howling Centre, was completed on Saturday afternoon 011 the Gisborne green, the match attracting the interest of many bowlers and their friends. The competingi links were skipped by old rivals, in M. W. Craig (Gisborne), and ,J ,). Martin (Kalnitia), and it was auto.paled that the match would prove a closely-fought one. As it developed, however, Gisborne gained so substantial a lead that it was unnecessary to play out the lull 21 heads, Kahutia. capitulating after a great rally in the middle of the game had been offset by corresponding Gisborne gains on later heads, leaving the visiting link in an impossible position. The rinks comprised Balfour, McCulloch, 11. E. Briglit, and M. W. Craig (Gisborne), and B. Power, Watts, Jenkins and J. .J. Martin (Kalnitia). The visitors were down three on the first head, and five on the second, but picked up two and one on succeeding heads, being down 5—3 on the fourth head. After Martin had added another single on the fourth, decreasing Gisborne’s lead to one point. Craig again shot ahead with 1,2, and 1 on successive heads, the score on the ninth being 9—4 in favor of Gisborne.

Disaster threatened Kalnitia when Gisborne took a four on the ninth, and a shade on t.iio following head, increasine- their lead to 10 points, and when two’s were, added to Gisborne’s tally on each of the eleventh and twelfth heads, it was obvious that only a bowling miracle could upset Craig’s chances ot winning. Kalnitia began to produce their real form in the four following heads, scoring eight points and reducing the Gisborne link’s lead to six 011 the sixteenth head, but the rally was shortlived and Craig took the next three heads, 2.3, 2. to lead 25-12 on the nineteenth. There being no chance of Kalnitia wiping out the deficit, Martin did not trouble his opponents to play out the remaining heads. At the conclusion of the match, the championship cup was presented to the Gisborne rink by the centre vice-presi-dent. Mr. T. F. Crawford, who offered particularly warm congratulations in

view of the strength and experience of Ihe Kalnitia team which Craig and his fellow representatives of Gisborne had defeated. The Kahutia rink had shown it c elf a remarkably good one, and was skipped by the club’s veteran skip, who on many occasions bad carried off the honors for Kalnitia in competition matches. Messrs. Craig and Martin responded to the remarks of the vicepresident, and cheers were given by the onlookers for both victors and vanquished.
