AUSTRALIAN SNAKE LIFE
PYTHONS IN QUEENSLAND'
Persons in the Yandina district of the North Coast of Queensland can regard themselves as fortunate even though a nythoii measuring 16ft. was found there. Compared with those found in the far north, a 16ft. member of the family can be regarded as quite small. According to Mr. Heber A. Longman, director of the Queensland Museum numerous kinds of pythons are found in Queensland,, but the largest have been discovered in the north of the State, some- of the specimens measuring up to 20ft. Compared with this, the Southern Queensland variety or python variagadus is rpiite small, seldom exceeding llfb. ; Without having seen the skin, said Mr. Longman, he could not say whether a reptile killed at Yandina. belonged to the southern or the northern variety. II it belonged to the southern variety and really measured 16ft. it would be an interesting specimen. The skin of a carpet snake, said Mr. Longman, was very often greater than the actual length of the snake when alive, as in the stretching and drying process a large .skin had been known to increase in length by 2ft.
