GRINDING OF CORNFLOUR
NEW LOCAL INDUSTRY
HINT TO MAIZE GROWERS
A suggestion that a new industry should be created locally in order to provide a new outlet for maize grown iii the district was made to a meeting of maize growers in the Matu-whero-Makarakn hall last night. It. was urged that, the erection of a mill for the manufacture of cornflour should' be a profitable commercial undertaking as well as absorbing maize at a payable figure to the grower." • 1 r ' L - J '. "'The suggestion was made by Mr. c: iv'css, who remarked that New Zealand imported £75,000 worth of cornflour annually. The growers could grist thfeir own maize, and could dispose' ot J the by-product .as chicken food. Wheat could be gristed for £1 5s a ton, if the Wheat Hoard was not in existencouragement to those who were endeavoring to create this new industry, they would receive every support. He could not say what the cost of a mill would be, perhaps from £2OOO to £4OOO, but the greatest cost would be in the packing. There was not a single mill in New Zealand that would manufacture cornflour, and the new industry would have no opposition. Much of the cornflour imports come from England, but a lot came also from elsewhere. A mill established locally would require thousands of bushels of maize. Mr. E. E. Wilson, who also urged action on .these lines, was certain ii the scheme were adopted growers would not regret it. Maize was not merely a food for poultry, but. also a staple food for humans, and the Gisborne district was th*e finest district under the flag for maize growing. ■Mr. C. Tietjon said he knew of one man mi Gisborne who ground all lm wheat, to secure his own meal, and also ground his own maize for cornflour. There was no reason why the grinding of maize could not be done on a larger scale for shipment as cornflour to other parts of New Zealand. The meeting passed no resolution on the matter.
