English Pig Breeding
A DANGER that New .Zealand and Canada, which countries maintain an embargo against the importations of live stock from places-where foot and mouth 'disease is known to exist, will, prejudice their places as pig-breeding countries is seen by English breeders. The Grocers ’ Gazette states that last year the British Pig Breeders’ Association exported 125 pigs to countries as far afield as Poland and Uruguay, and adds: “At a time when pig breeding is coming to be recognised as one of the most important branches of British and Dominion agriculture, the absence 6f New Zealand and Canada as importers of breeding pigs is a reminder that, while the majority of countries within the Empire accept the safeguards of the London Quarantine Station, these two countries are disinclined to do so, and in consequence the export of livestock from Groat Britain has virtually ceased, despite the existence of firm orders. 1 “On the other hand, Poland, whoso rapid expansion of pig production is one Of the outstanding events of postwar agricultural development, . lias been the largest buyer of British pigs, her preference being for the Large White. “When it is appreciated that in 1025 the amount of pig products sent, by Poland to this country amounted to less than 0.05 of our total imports, and that she now finds us nearly 10 per cent, of. the total (amounting to no less than 1,170,000 cwt) the possibilities of expansion in this country aro thrown into relief.”
