BOOKMAKER PINED £IOO DETECTIVE TAKES ’PHONE BETS (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Thomas William LeeCc, 65. was fined £IGO in the Police Court to-day for keeping a common gaming house, and J)avid Henry Kirk, 54, was fined £6O for assisting him. Lecce’s premises were jn a private house, and during a raid while Detective l.irady was answering the telephone, lie took several bets, including the winning double at Ellerslie. Counsel said that Leece, although he would not have lout the same- double himself, felt in honor bound to pay rut on it. Leece did no cash betting, but did everything over the telephone. He paid income tax every year.
