AMATEURS’ MEETING

GOOD DAY AT RESERVE THRILLING CYCLE RACING FINE ALL-HOUND PROGRAMME. Though the number of visiting athier.es at tue meeting was below expectation;.l, the blit oi tare presentee ,0 patrons of llie Gisborne Amateur Athletic, and Harriers' Chub meet at die Reserve yesterday was a good one from most poinLs ul view, and as the amateur club s officials intend to make til is lixture an annual one, they can consider the series lias had an auspicious opening. The attendance was fair, despite tile many counterattractions m the country and along the Coast, and competition in ah classes of athletics represented on tin. programme was good. Of special interest were the cycling races, and the flat sprint ovems for men and ladies respectively. In the wheel events, T. Campbell, the local crack performer, again carried off the major honors, conceding substantial handicaps to all his opponents, ami winning two of the three races at distances beyond half a mile, lie found in P. Goudie. the Hawke’s Bay rider, a. tough opponent who was always able to produce a fast linishing effort, and the climax of their rivalry came in the three-mile race, the last of the wheel races on the programme. Goudie won the mile "ace, after an easy success in bis 1 heat: he received the benefit of a 70 yards difference in handicaps from the virtual scratch rider, and he carried the other finalists along with him to such a tune that Campbell was unable to secure a place in the deciding beat.

In the two-mile event, Campbell was rehandicapped front 40 to GOyds- 1 , this blunging him relatively closer to the Hawke's Bay man, who was on 150 yds. Campbell made no bones about this test, for he got up with the other contestants in quick order, and won by two lengths, Goudie being unplaced on this occasion. Then in the three-mile race, Campbell was on GO ydf l ., and Goudie was rohandieapped from 1170 to 240yds.. The visiting rider quickly drew up to the men in front of him. and then quietened down, bis tactics suiting Campbell admirably. With two laps still to go, the backmarker was in close touch with the field, and he went out to the lead in the last lap. Goudie was close on his wheel, however, and in the la.vt furlong unwound a great burst of speed, shooting to the front as the pair came into the straight. The thrill of the meeting was furnished when Campbell responded with his own final sprint, and the pair drove for the line on equal terms. In the last 10yds, the local rider edged his 1 machine in front, to win by a margin of half a wheel. The Napier field athlete G. Phillips was a prominent performer in broad jump, hop-step-and-jump, and shot put events, and also won his heat in the 220yds flat handicap, from 20yds.

This latter event produced a sterling race in the final, G. Quinn carrying off the honors by inches merely, from N. Harvey and G. Mills. The finalists were bunched a few yards from the tape, and Quinn finished wonderfully well. The half-mile handicap produced almost an equally good finish. It. Quinn being .successful in this event, while in the 100yds handicap, G. Quinn was again a winner in a bunched linish. The mile Mil was mainly interesting as- a < ";:<• I between A. Young and K. Cousins, the High School rivals, Cousins failing to reduce very materially the handicap of 20yds he accorded Young, whose lime from .130yds was -lniin 22sec. 11. Gee ran third, giving a fair and promising performance.

Tim lady runners and field athletes' furnished, as usual, one of the most uUeresting sections of the programme, Miss C. McConnell won the 7f>yds dash easily, and Miss Sired look the 1 00yds -.print, while honors in the shot put, high .jump and broad jump handicaps went to .Miss J. (.'hoveaux, who with her si.oter shared the virtual scratch mark in the sprint events.

The meeting was well conducted, wiHiout loss of time over events, and the competitors s'howed a good eo.peralive spirit by turning out on their marks up to time and in good numbers, though several of the prominent runner;' and field athletes were engaged almost to full capacity throughmt the day.
