OBITUARY

MISS GLADYS BATSON Much sympathy will be extended to Mr. and .Mrs. C. W. Batson. Parau street, in the loss of their only daughter, Miss Gladys Evelyn Batson, 22, whose death occurred yesterday, after a lingering illness which had incapacitated her for the greater part of three years. The late .Miss Batson was horn in Palmerston ..North, and came to Gisborne with her parents 15 years ago. As a tennis player and swimmer, she took an enthusiastic part in sport, and m addition was a capable pianist. For several years she avas employed byMessrs. J. J. Niven and Company in their Gisborne branch, and later secured an appointment in the Public Trust* Department, also in Gisborne, from which post she was forced to retire owing to progressive ill-health. Her demise was not unexpected, but will lie noted by her many friends with the deepest regret. A cheerful disposition enabled her to hear with fortitude her long suffering.

MR. HAROLD WILSON

The death occurred at the Waiapu Hospital yesterday of Mr. Harold Wilson, 56, a well-known resident of Tokomaru Bay. His death ended a painful illness. The late Mr. Wilson, who was highly respected, was known chiefly as a partner of the. East Coast Press, but his interests in the company were lecently disposed of. The interment took place at the Tokomaru Bay cemetery this afternoon. Sincere sympathy will be extended by his many friends to .Mrs. Wilson.

The mortal remains of the late Mr William Nelson, of “Wnikoko,” were laid to rest; in the Havelock North cemetery on Friday, the cortege being the longest witnessed in Hastings for a great number of years. Mr. Wuliapango, an old and higlilyiTspmtcd chief of the NgatiKahimgungui tribe, passed away on Sunday at the age of 93 years. For the greater part of his life he had lived at Matahiwi,near Clive. Mr. Wahapango spent his earlier years at whaling stations on the Hawke’s Bay coast. During the. Maori War, of about 1865-70. lie fought with the friendly natives against the rebels. The funeral of the late Mr. Charles E. Kirk was held yesterday afternoon, the interment taking place at the Tarulieru cemetery. The ceremony was attended by a large number of friends of the deceased, including members of Lodge Montrose and the Manchester Unity Oddfellows Lodge, of which tin' late Mr. Kirk was a member. A service was conducted at the residence of Mr. Kirk in Run street by the Rev. J. H. Boyd, who also officiated at the graveside, while a Masonic service was conducted by P.M. Bro. George W. Aitken, chaplain of Lodge Montrose. The pall bearers wen*: Messrs. A. W., Archie, and George Kirk, brothers of the deceased; Messrs. Colin and K. Kirk, nephews of the deceased; and Bro. A. W. >Smitli, master of bodge Montrose.
