SWIMMING

GISBORNE CLUB OPENING OF SEASON Swimmiugi club activities for the present season will officially commence next Monday at 5.30 p.m., when the Gisborne club will hold the first event of the season. The race will be over a course of approximately 300 yards, commencing at the William“Pettie bridge and concluding at the Kaili bridge. All competitors will start from scratch, the winner holding for one year the most valuable of the club’s cups, the Gibbs Cup. This is a solid silver cup presented by Mr. E. Gibbs in 1919. The first holder of the cup was D. W. MeKeague, who is still one of the club’s premier swimmers. The present holder is J. Miller, who will defend it. Although entries do not close until Friday, the leading swimmers have signified their intention of starting,' among the most prominent, being D. W. McKeague, J. Miller, A. Clark, M. Owen, T. Wauchop, R. Aislabie, the Martin brothers, and D. Littler. Last year the race was remarkable for the close finishes among all l ho competitors, and, on present form, it appears as if another race full of interest will he witnessed. In conjunction with the scratch race a sealed handicap is to be held, so although a competitor does not finish first, lie may still win the handi cap event. A NEW WORLD’S RECORD (Elec.
