“DANGEROUS CORNER”
ECHO OF FATALITY TRAITIC CONTROL MOOTED Traffic control was considered by members of tlio Gisborne Borough Council last night as more important than the present height of the hedge at the corner of Roebuck and Aberdeen roads. This opinion was expressed when the council discussed a brief paragraph in the inspection committee’s report bearing on tlie recent fatality at the intersection. The committee suggested the partial removal of the hedge, hut the council believed that white lines for proper traffic direction would he better. The matter was referred to the works committee. The report of the inspection committee stated':—-‘‘Dangerous' Corner.—TJhe intersection of Roebuck road and Aberdeen road, where the recent accident Occurred, was inspected, and it was found that the hedge had been trimmed, but the committed would suggest that the owner should be asked to remove the hedge altogether for a short length at the corner.
The Mayor, Mr D. W. Coleman, M.P., said he inspected the corner on 'Monday. He stood on the crown <ofi tlie road in Aberdeen road and he could see every cyclist and the hood of every car on Hie other side of the hedge. He noticed that the hedge had been cut recently. The owner of the property told him that tlie hedge was cut twice a year, hut only Min. were taken off at a time. The owner said he would not- take the hedge down completely, and if he was forced to do so lhe would replace it with a high fence. The owner, however, had agreed to cut the hedge down a further Gin. The Mayor believed that, if steps were taken to keep the traffic on tho correct side of the road, this intersectiu would" be less dangerous, for at present the traffic appeared to move on to the wrong side when crossing the intersection towards the bridge. Ho 'believed a silent policeman or white lines would have the effect of keeping the traffic on to its correct side.
Or. I). 'S. Thompson was of the opinion that when the hedge was cut it would not he a danger. The Mayor added that, when viewed from the 'crown of the road, the ilicdge was not too high. It was decided to refer the matter to the works "committbe.
