Practically; midway* 436 miles from Sydney, in a direct line, is Lord llowe Island, said by those who know to be the most “tropical-looking” island in the whole-South . Pacific. It is the home of the beautiful Kentia palm, the seeds from which are shipped to Sydney, whence, in normal times, 40CO to 5000 bushels are cxnorted annually to all parts of the world. None of the land on Lord Howe Island has been sold and ’ the people pay no rent, occiiping the land on sufferance only, the Government of Australia reserving the ‘right of resumption whenever it may see fit. All island affairs, including the Kentia palm seed industry, are administered by a board of control in Sydney, with an advisory* council on the island. The population is about 120 Each man is required to.,.collect., a quota of seed each year and receives a "share of the proceeds. - The island contains about 3220 acres, hut only about 300 acres is suitable for agriculture. The soil of this small area is extremely rich and will, produce, almost any sub-tropical vegetation.
