A Fascinating Game
TJERD testing has become a fascinating pastime, as well as a profitable occupation, for many a farmer. This aspect lias not been lost sight of by those whose business it is to foster the herd testing spirit, and they lose no opportunities in stressing the. additional interest a farmer talces in his cows once they are under test. A Gisborne instance might, well lie quoted. This is in regard, to a small herd of between 20 and 30 cows, and not the least, interest is taken by a man who is not the owner, but who is linked with the herd only because of a blood relationship with the actual owner. The non-owner is a slioopfannor, but ho states that lie fakes more interest in his relative’s small herd than he docs in his .own run. Discussing tlie matter the other day, he said that he had become engrossed in each cow’s performance month by month, and took a delight in comparing her production with that of her mother or daughter. He was also most interested to seo liow the progeny of the most recent bull compared with those of other bulls, while in addition there were 'many other points that, engaged his attention as he perused the test sheets.
