TE HAPARA SEWERAGE
PROGRESS OF REPAIRS TRIBUTE TO ENGINEER A tribute to the manner in which the borough engineer, Mr E. ]!. Thomas, had tackled the'ditlicult problem of repairing the earthquake damage to the To II a para sewerage system was paid by the Mayor, Mr !>. \V. Coleman, MM’., at last evening’s meeting of the Borough Council. In a report on the progress of the work, Mr Thomas stated:—
“The two puarps, with the assistance at' the temporary <sin. rising main, are still capable of discharging the total inflow. Special attention has been given to the measurement of this flow, mt: no decrease lias been noticeable. An experiment for the locating of breakages was put in hand and has proved successful. Over a section of 1150 ft. of 12in. earthenware main running from Childers road to Abbott troet eight breakages wen* found, four small and four large. The most serious of these was usually found within two or three pipes of the manholes.
“The repairing of the most serious leaks will be put in hand immediately, the smaller ones being left until later. The amount of sand getting into the mains is considerable, and the repairing of the more serious breakages will reduce this, and thus lessen the wear on the pumps.”
The 'Mayor remarked that the engineer was to be complimented upon the manner in which lie had gone about his work, giving full satisfaction to the council and the people. II was an extremely awkward job, and Air Thomas had used ingenious devices to locate the leaks. The council was very pleased with his work.
