In the House of Commons, the Prime Minister, Mr. Ramsay MacDonald, stated that the Government proposed to introduce anil pass ihrough all stages before the end of the present session legislation to deal with certain aspects i ( the administration of the means test. Mr. George Lansbury said his party would do : ts best to help the Government to get the bill through. The oiler was welcomed by the Pro inier, who remarked : “I do hope, however, the great differences between us may he solved and that wo may try and cu operate to produce a maximum conliilmtion to this very human problem.” The so-called means test is the inquiry made in individual cases by local committees into the means of unemployed who, having exhausted the right to benefit. may receve a transitional benefit if I heir needs warrant it. It has been found advisable to fix an approximate standard to secure uniformity of action by local authorities in applying the tests.
