WAIROA NEWS

(Herald Correspondent.)

The verification of tho rumors afloat; respecting the freezing works came as a shock to the more optimistic section ofthe community, which had begun to believe that tho re-starting of the Wairoa works would go a long way to improving the general financial situation. It is too early yet to predict what tho loss of the works will mean to the fanners, for as yet the shareholders have not had a say. Some residents consider that if further financial assistance is needed, and tin* people of the district caii spare what is needed, then they should put up a definite proposition to the shareholders at the annual meeting. It is reported that a Wairarapa fanner who has reverted to the horse and gig proved an "absent-minded, beggar” for through sheer force of habit ho pulled up at tho bowser station, waited till nc one could see him, and then stole silently away. The writer can cap this truly with an incident in Wairoa in tho early days of the motor-car. A business* man, who had scorned the gig for tho motor, after learning to drive in the backyard, proudly ran the car out on to Marino parade, and not being a skilled driver ho narrowly missed going over the bank into the river, but with a stentorian ‘‘Whoa !” the car was pulled up.
